We are lucky to have Joanne leading GI Cancer Trials.

Having spent the first part of her career as a Pharmacist, Jo found her way into finance after being offered a finance role within a philanthropic organisation working with disadvantaged young people and education, and couldn’t say no. She has always enjoyed working with numbers, and helping others understand what they mean. The opportunity to join GI Cancer Trials enabled Joanne to combine her two professional careers – health and finance.

With this strong background in pharmacy, accounting and business management, Joanne joined the organisation in 2019 to lead our Finance and Operations functions. During mid 2022-2024, Joanne assumed the role of Acting Chief Executive Officer while our past CEO Russell Conley was on medical leave for GI cancer treatment.

During this period of uncertainty, Joanne demonstrated strategic and thoughtful leadership, with her mantra of “continuous improvement” enabling positive change within the organisation. As a result, Joanne was appointed to the Chief Executive Officer role in October 2024.

On weekends, Jo is a busy unpaid taxi driver for her daughter, but can also be found tending to her bees and catching up with her friends.

Sandra’s role as the Head of Research is to strengthen the leading role the organisation plays role in practice-changing research by fostering collaboration, supporting our members, overseeing our talented research team, advancing equitable access to trials, and ensuring our research remains patient-centred.

With 20 years’ experience across investigator-initiated and commercial clinical research, Sandra was previously the Clinical Trials Operations Lead at NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, managing the TOPGEAR, MASTERPLAN and ASCOLT trials.

“It is exciting to be part of a dynamic and smart team with the shared goal of improving outcomes for people with GI cancer.”

Ali is responsible for developing and implementing our fundraising strategy; raising vital funds to support our mission of a world free from gastro-intestinal cancers. With over 30 years of experience, including event production, publishing, sponsorship, and reality television (Big Brother, X Factor, MKR), Ali’s passion lies in the nonprofit sector. Her career in the field began at Children’s Cancer Institute eight years ago.

When not working, Ali enjoys spending time with her almost-adult daughters (17 and 21), cooking, socialising, attending theatre performances and practicing pilates. Ali thrives on working with people and finds great satisfaction in engaging with passionate donors who are committed to making a difference.

“I was attracted to many things about this role, notably the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of people with GI cancer.”

Erin is responsible for developing communications strategies to grow our awareness, and to engage with members, supporters and the wider community.

After originally studying Exercise Science, Erin found her way into communications and marketing while working at CareerOne (News Corp Australia). She was immediately excited at the prospect of a profession being both creative and analytical. Since then, Erin has worked in communications and marketing roles at the property website Domain, digital start-up NextDoor (formerly Nabo), and most recently at the head office of IKEA.

On the weekend, Erin enjoys family time with her young daughters, but also enjoys some rare kid-free time when she can get it.

“Having a strong sense of commitment and a collaborative approach to help unlock better health outcomes for people impacted by GI cancer is what drives me every day.”

As Finance Manager, Abraham is responsible for the oversight of the finance function and provides broad support to the organisation, including financial reporting, budgeting and decision support.

Abraham brings over 25 years of finance experience across a wide range of sectors, giving him a depth of knowledge and perspective that he draws on every day.

On the weekends, Abraham enjoys spending time with family and friends, and can often be found catching live music.

“I enjoy working behind the scenes to support colleagues across the organisation and learning how each team contributes to advancing GI cancer research.”

As Executive Assistant and Operations Coordinator at GI Cancer Trials, Nat provides day-to-day support to the CEO while helping coordinate administrative and operational activities across the organisation. Her role includes managing travel and event logistics, coordinating team meetings and events, and supporting teams to ensure day-to-day operations run smoothly.

Prior to joining GI Cancer Trials, Nat worked as a Facilities and Office Manager, overseeing corporate workplace operations, managing reception services, coordinating contractors and service providers, and helping create an organised and welcoming office environment.

Outside of work, she enjoys gardening, hiking, spending time with family, and cooking Latin American and Caribbean cuisine.

As Events Lead, Jennie organises and manages our events through all stages, from planning to execution.

While working in conference organising, Jennie found purpose in being able to contribute to the potential development of the healthcare sector, bettering people’s lives. She has previously worked with diverse, multidisciplinary stakeholders and particularly enjoyed building relationships with those she interacted with.

At GI Cancer Trials, Jennie works closely with all business teams, in particular to develop our prestigious yearly Annual Scientific Meeting.

On the weekends, you can find her spending time with her family and discovering new eateries across Sydney.

Dal is our second-longest serving team member, having been with GI Cancer Trials for more than 20 years. She is the brains trust of the organisation!

As Executive Assistant, Dal supports the CEO and COO and plays a vital role in the Operations Team, supporting our members and the delivery of the Annual Scientific Meeting.

“I joined GI Cancer Trials because my family has a history of GI Cancer. It’s really great to see how dedicated our clinicians in their research.”

Laura is one of our senior clinical research assistants and does an incredible job supporting the management of our clinical trials. Prior to this role, Laura was our administrative assistant but she was encouraged and supported to take the next step in her career and move into research, and has loved every minute of it.

Laura’s favourite part of working here is seeing the positive impact our hard working clinicians have on our health and within our society.

On weekends, Laura can be found catching up with friends and family, baking up a storm in her kitchen, or escaping to the coast for a spot of fishing and to relax at the beach.

“My passion for cancer care and research meant that I couldn’t look past an opportunity to work at GI Cancer Trials. A role that allows me to expand my sills in the field of research, whilst working with a team that is dedicated to improving the outcomes of patients with GI cancer is truly a win-win!”

Louise is our Clinical Development Lead, supporting the research team with managing our pipeline of new ideas and trials. As a Registered Nurse, Louise has extensive experiences in Oncology and Haematology units, working in the Haematology unit at Saint Vincent’s Hospital, where she was responsible for administering chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as well as caring for bone marrow/stem cell transplant patients. In 2017, Louise joined the Kinghorn Cancer Centre as a haematology-specific study coordinator in mid-2018. There she quickly progressed to become the Haematology Clinical Trial’s Team Lead, where she worked closely with the haematology department to strategically tailor and grow the trials portfolio in accordance with the changing demands of this unique patient population.

“I am excited to join the GI Cancer Trials team and contribute to making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients with GI cancers by improving treatment outcomes. Being part of such a motivated and collaborative group is truly inspiring, and I am honoured to play a role in this impactful work.”

As the Translational Research Coordinator, Gemma supports the Translational Research Lead in managing the operational aspects of translational research. Gemma has over 24 years of diverse experience in the healthcare sector, bringing a strong clinical and research background with expertise in reproductive science, healthcare improvement, translational research and oncology clinical drug trials.

Her work spans qualitative and quantitative methodologies, clinical trial management, and projects aimed at improving health outcomes, treatment pathways, optimising chronic disease management, and enhancing cancer care.

On weekends, Gemma enjoys time outdoors walking, kayaking, cycling, picnicking, all things bees and honey, while spending time with her loved ones including a very spoilt cat called Sunny.

“My parents are both scientists, so I think I was born to have a career in research! I originally trained to be a microbiologist, but when I lost several close family members to cancer, I felt compelled to change my research career to help those people living with cancer.”

Sarah completed her PhD at Macquarie University in bowel cancer research, where she used specialist mass spectrometry to identify proteins that could predict for patient outcome. Her research centred on personalising cancer treatments to the patient. Since then, she has worked at the Kolling Institute (based at Royal North Shore Hospital and part of the University of Sydney), using proteomics to answer a range of clinical questions in lung and GI cancers.

“Losing loved ones to cancer has deeply influenced my career path and fuelled my passion for translational research. The opportunity to be part of this organisation where I can contribute to research and clinical trials that directly improve the lives of cancer patients and their families, is incredibly meaningful to me.”

Atefeh, who will be covering for Dr Sarah Hayes while she is on parental leave, will oversee our Translational Research (TR) Program, integrating innovative scientific approaches and concepts into the clinical trials. She will be responsible for facilitating the preparation and submission of grant applications for our trials. A key part of her role is to strategically match trial concepts with the most competitive funding opportunities, ensuring that research is positioned for success.

Atefeh has over 16 years of research experience across Singapore and Aotearoa Australia, being part of world-renowned institutes including A*Star-Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Duke-NUS Medical School, the National University of Singapore and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

Her research has focused on the progression of Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) infection to liver cancer with the goal of identifying targeted therapeutic strategies to improve treatment outcomes for patients. In addition to her academic research, as a principal scientist she has led biomarker discovery and validation programs in partnership with pharmaceutical companies within a contract research organisation.

When she’s not at work, you’ll find Atefeh out and about enjoying nature – walking and hiking with family, friends, and her adorable 2-year-old pup, Milo.

“I love working in the clinical trial sector, as it allows me to be at the forefront of the development of new medicines and therapies, ultimately contributing to improved patient outcomes and reshaping clinical practices.”

Julia’s role as Clinical Operations Lead encompasses overseeing the clinical operations of all external sponsored and endorsed trials as well as project managing the in-house clinical trials. After completing her PhD in Human Physiology at the University of Newcastle in November 2020, Julia worked as a Research Manager at various independent clinical trial sites. In that capacity, she was project managing all clinical trials at site and overseeing clinical operations, HR, business development and finances. With more than 7 years of clinical trial experience across commercial and investigator-initiated trials and across various therapeutic areas, Julia is excited about contributing her expertise and expanding her knowledge about oncology trials.

On the weekend, Julia likes to explore new areas around Newcastle with her partner and their German Shepherd.

“I most enjoy being a part of investigator-led clinical trials where the research directly improves the lives and outcomes for patients with gastro-intestinal cancers. It is exciting to be a part of the start-up of the first clinical trials being conducted under the new central trial coordination framework.”

Ingrid brings a wealth of experience in clinical trials, with a particular focus on investigator-led breast cancer research and early-phase clinical trial project management working at Contract Research Organisation. Her expertise will be invaluable as we coordinate our in-house trials and establish the Clinical Research Centre.

When she’s not busy coordinating our trials, Ingrid loves playing hockey, gardening, and spending quality time with her family and her furry friends.

“What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to contribute to expanding the trials portfolio and contribute to research that will lead to improvement in outcomes for people with gastro–intestinal cancers.”

John’s primary responsibility revolves around supporting the development and ongoing operations of the \Clinical Research Centre. This entails various tasks, such as aiding in the creation of new trial concepts, ensuring clinical oversight for trials within our portfolio, drafting protocols, and assisting in the coordination of events like the Preceptorship.

Previously, John held the role of Clinical Research Fellow at the Auckland Cancer Trial Centre in Aotearoa New Zealand, where he focused on early phase clinical trials.

On weekends, he cherishes moments spent with his wife, exploring Auckland’s diverse culinary scene, and enjoying leisurely walks.

“I’m looking forward to contributing my expertise to advancing research initiatives and ultimately improve patient outcomes in the field of GI cancer.”

Bridget supports the development of collaborative research at GI Cancer Trials through facilitating research start-up, assisting in developing industry submissions and grant applications and fostering effective research relationships.

Bridget has worked in clinical research for the past decade. She has held roles in other nonprofit collaborative clinical trials groups like TROG Cancer Research, in pharmaceutical companies and, notably, developing an investigational medicinal product targeting the intracellular enzyme 11β-HSD1 in the brain.

On weekends, she enjoys cooking, pilates and attending local events as a member of the Hunter Young Professionals group.

My passion for science propelled me to pursue my Bachelor of medical science. Through this degree I gained the exposure and interest to have a career as a senior hospital scientist in pathology. Whilst I was working as a hospital scientist I completed my Master’s in International Public Health, which drove my interest in health promotion and research.

I started my career in microbiology at Royal North Shore Public Hospital and expanded my laboratory work into histology at a private pathology practice. In this practice I worked as a Senior Scientific Officer for over seven years. In this role, I managed the day-to-day running of the laboratory, and also trained and managed staff consisting of over 10 technical officers and scientific staff.

My interest in research methods and my understanding of the importance of reliable and reproduceable data in health promotion as well as my clinical exposure to various types of cancers as a senior hospital scientist in histology.

I wish to learn and expand my knowledge of clinical trials and how they are conducted. Be able to contribute to working on better treatments for GI cancer patients to improve their lives.

As a Clinical Trial Project Manager at GI Cancer Trials, Ari oversees clinical trials from start to finish, monitoring study progress, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements throughout each project’s lifecycle.

Ari brings several years of experience from a breast cancer-focused not-for-profit organisation, where he worked across Phase II and Phase III clinical trials in both early-stage and metastatic breast cancer settings.

Outside of work, he enjoys playing Dungeons & Dragons, heading to the beach, and staying active at the gym.

“I have a strong passion for creating connections within the community, driving change and hearing people’s stories. I am grateful that this role allows me to understand the reasons why people decide to fundraise for us, while simultaneously working towards making a meaningful difference in the lives of those impacted by cancer.”

As our Bequest and Partnerships Lead, Tiffany works closely with our GI cancer community to develop positive partnerships with community organisations and foundations, and helps our loyal donors leave a legacy through research.

After receiving her Master of Health Policy degree, she found she was attracted to not-for-profit roles that did work valuable within the community. Tiffany first worked for the foundation arm of Mrs Obama’s childhood obesity campaign in Washington, DC, doing policy, events and fundraising. After moving to Australia, she worked in a fundraising and events role at Kidney Health Australia.

On the weekend, she enjoys spending time with her daughters, organising events for their schools, drinking plenty of coffee, exploring the city, staying active and travelling.

“The best part of my role is getting to meet and work with the incredible donors and supporters who drive the impactful work that we do. I am truly inspired by the people who choose to make a difference to the lives of those living with GI cancer.”

With a strong background in marketing and fundraising, Megan is responsible for managing our fundraising marketing program and creating campaigns that promote and drive support for our clinical trials.

Megan is also responsible for looking after our community of valued annual and regular donors by making sure they know how much their support means to us, and ensuring that they are kept up-to-date on the impact their support has had on our work.

On the weekends she likes to get out and about with her two young children, catch up with friends and family, try her hand at cooking new recipes, and dream about upcoming travel plans.

Pramesh is responsible for maintaining relationships with our supporters in the GI cancer community who are eager for to help bring better treatments to life through clinical trials, as well as maintaining our database.

In Nepal, Pramesh was involved in a polio vaccine distribution as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) and a vitamin A capsule distribution program as part of the UNICEF-supported National Vitamin A Program (NVAP), maintaining district records of recipients. Inspired by his mother, a dedicated social worker, he was actively involved in the community.

On the weekend, Pramesh can be found immersed in photography, playing soccer, taking walks and spending time with friends and family.

As Marketing Communications Lead, Sisse is responsible for delivering public-facing communications activities and communications support for key events and sponsor activities.

Sisse works closely with the communications, fundraising, research, and operations teams and with external contractors and suppliers.

Her career in Australia started shortly after moving from Copenhagen to Sydney and she has since worked in various account management roles within the media industry across a diverse array of clients.

On the weekend, you will find Sisse being out and about with family and friends, enjoying the family’s sailboat, being active and looking after her health and well-being.

As Communications and Membership Engagement Coordinator, Sally works to strengthen member connection and participation while delivering communications that enhance the profile, reputation and impact of GI Cancer Trials.

Before moving to Sydney, Sally gained broad marketing and communications experience in the UK across agency, publishing and healthcare settings. Most recently, she supported membership engagement and marketing at the Royal College of Physicians, where she found great fulfilment in contributing to an organisation united by the goal of improving health outcomes. This experience ultimately inspired her to join GI Cancer Trials and continue supporting work that makes a meaningful difference.

Outside of work, Sally enjoys discovering Sydney’s cafés and restaurants or staying active while exploring the city’s coastline.

As our Financial Accountant, Evie’s role is to support all financial activities, including payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank reconciliations and other finance-related operations.

Evie has previously worked as an Accounts and Admin officer for private companies but always felt something was missing, as her work doesn’t have much impact on helping the community. She has a profound respect for the ideology that GI Cancer Trials is working towards, and she enjoys working with wonderful people who are working hard toward the same goals.

On the weekend, Evie enjoys family time at the beach, walking, bike riding or catching up with friends.
