Brighton local Immogen Newcombe-Bennion is an exceptional young woman and someone her classmates can look up to. In the past, she has raised funds for kids with cancer and donated her long hair. In 2014, she took on the Gutsy Challenge for the GI Cancer Institute, gaining sponsorship to eat four serves of vegetables every day and three of fruit over a month. She was so inspired by the challenge that she encouraged her Grade 6 class to get involved and held a Gutsy Day with over 70 students holding grape and spoon races and other events.
In December 2016, Immogen again took on the Gutsy Challenge and she has chosen a tough month! “I know that December is when everyone is eating pudding and Christmas cake, but I wanted to really challenge myself” Immogen explained. “I also want to fundraise to support gastro-intestinal cancer research because of the significant number of people diagnosed and the low survival rate. Breast cancer, for instance, gets a lot more attention”
Gastro-intestinal (GI) cancers affect the oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bowel. Over 24,600 Australians are affected every year and 33 die every day – that’s one person every 45 minutes. The five-year survival rate is just 49%, while the breast cancer survival rate is 90%.
“I like the Gutsy Challenge because I am keeping myself healthy and helping others at the same time” Immogen explained further.
Immogen has raised $534.00 so far and is aiming to raise $600.00. “I’ve kept everyone updated via SMS and shared healthy recipes on my fundraising page” Immogen says. “I always make sure I thank my sponsors because I want them to feel included. I’m going to continue to hold at least two fundraisers every year because I want to help people with cancer.”
All funds raised by Immogen will provide better treatments for people living with GI cancer, through clinical trials and vital research.
