Protocol Title
A randomized phase II trial – Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Guided Stereotactic Adaptive Radiotherapy for Targeting Abdominal Cancer
Purpose of the Study
This Australian multi-centre trial will be one of the first studies globally to assess the impact of MRI-guided high dose radiotherapy on cancer control and quality of life in patients with metastatic cancer in the abdomen. MRI-guidance provides an innovative approach to potentially improve clinical outcomes for patients with abdominal cancers that are often difficult to treat successfully. This new approach will enable clinicians to target the tumour with a higher dose which may improve treatment, while avoiding nearby healthy organs such as the bowel. We hope this treatment will improve both treatment outcomes, as well as patient survival. This will allow more patients to be pain-free with minimal side-effects (e.g. less permanent diarrhoea) and better quality of life. This trial will also explore how new technology that combines a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, and a radiotherapy linear accelerator (Linac) can investigate the biological characteristics of an individual’s tumour.
We believe that this research will allow clinicians to predict the effectiveness of radiotherapy, enabling an innovative approach to overcome any resistance to treatment. If MRI images show an area likely to be resistant to treatment, this can be targeted with a higher dose of radiotherapy to improve the chances of effectively treating of the cancer.
