Preceptorship in precision medicine in GI cancers

Don’t miss our premier annual educational event for senior trainees and junior consultants. 

Preceptorships are an excellent way to learn the current state of the art management of GI cancers, while networking with expert leaders. Taking part in a Preceptorship is a great first step towards an active role within the membership.

It is a heavily subscribed event with overwhelmingly positive reviews from past attendees, highlighting a strong educational focus. The preceptors are pre-eminent medical, surgical, radiation oncologists and community advocates from Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Places are limited, and applications will be assessed before positions are confirmed. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by mid-June.

GI Cancer Trials will cover one night’s accommodation and flights (if applicable) for successful applicants. Further details, including approved funding amounts and travel arrangements, will be provided once places have been finalised.

Preceptorship learning model

Preceptorships are intensive learning courses about treatment best practice developed  through the evolution of clinical trials. It is an interactive review of literature to understand the progress of treatment for GI cancers in the context of current treatment paradigms.

The format is that of a short course (two-day retreat), with active participation from attendees regarding reviewing papers and presenting cases. Preceptorships provide ~30 senior trainees and junior consultants with access to senior members who are leading cancer specialists (preceptors) for mentoring in small groups.

Preceptees engage with both current and historical data, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of relevant trials, treatment timelines, strengths, weaknesses, and emerging research directions. Preceptees have the opportunity to review papers, prepare a presentation, receive feedback both prior to and at the Preceptorship by their assigned Preceptor, and present at the Preceptorship. Content is decided independently by the preceptors to ensure the academic independence of the teaching material.
