On the 16th of September 2023, against the backdrop of a beautiful sunny day, a group of 18 dedicated fundraisers gathered to embark on a journey through one of Australia’s most ancient and spectacular landscapes.
The Blue Mountains Gutsy Challenge, was a one-day trek from Katoomba to Wentworth Falls. Our fundraisers were in for a treat as they trekked through rugged terrain, offering uninterrupted views of iconic landmarks.
However, the Gutsy Challenge was more than just a scenic hike; it was a mission to raise vital funds for the Innovation Grant, which supports new research into GI cancers.

What made this event truly special was the wonderful team of medical professionals, community members, and GI Cancer Institute staff who came together for a common cause. Their shared commitment to fighting GI cancers was evident in their determination throughout the trek.
For community member Amanda Liddell the Blue Mountains was her first Gutsy Challenge, “Meeting lovely new people and hearing their motivation to hike in the mountains and raise money for a great cause certainly made my commitment worthwhile.”
Trek leader and oncologist, Dr Megan Barnet, sums up the importance of GI cancer research, “GI cancers are increasingly common and affect people young and old. My patients are inspiring and gutsy, and they deserve our support.”

The Gutsy Challenge not only provides a unique opportunity for participants to connect with nature and each other, but also serves as a testament to the power of collective action. Together, they raised an impressive $28,000, which will contribute to ongoing research to find better ways to treat GI cancers and provide hope to patients and their loved ones.
Our next Blue Mountains Gutsy Challenge trek will be held Saturday 7th September 2024. Find out how you can join our team.
