Extinct Volcanoes and GI Cancer Research

In November 2023, a Gutsy team of seven Australians and three Kiwi’s set off from Christchurch in Aotearoa New Zealand, for a one-day, 23km trek, along the Crater Rim Trail in the South Island.

The Crater Rim is an incredibly scenic walk around the rim of an extinct volcano, and trekking it was no easy feat! Our team completed their walk in 9 hours. All while keeping their spirits high knowing they have raised vital funds for GI cancer research.

“This trek was a great opportunity to explore a new location with my colleagues from across the country whilst helping to increase access to clinical trials for the people that need it most,” says trekker and Bendigo Health Research Manager, Narelle McPhee.

“The trek was amazing, really challenging, but a beautiful landscape. Plus meeting and chatting with the other trekkers was lovely,” says Emeline Mathieu, representing the Pierre Fabre pharmaceutical team.

This year the GI Cancer Institute partnered with the Gut Cancer Foundation in Aotearoa New Zealand to host this Trans-Tasman trek, together raising $35,000 to support a better quality of life and improved treatment options for GI cancer patients.

We are so grateful to all our fundraisers and their donors for helping us climb mountains to achieve great things in the GI cancer space!
