Upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancers (cancer of the oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, gall bladder and small intestine) are relatively uncommon individually; but when grouped together accounted for a total of 900 new cases in Western Australia in 2014. These cancers are characterised with low 5 year survival rates and improvements in treatment have been slow. Professor Eva Segelov (pictured here) is at the forefront of Australian and international clinical trials seeking to change this.
