Welcoming Rebekka Thompson-Jones as Communications Manager

Rebekka recently joined the AGITG and GI Cancer Institute as Acting Communications Manager covering Erin Burgess’s parental leave.

HOW DID YOU COME TO WORK IN COMMUNICATIONS?

I’m originally from London, and as a young teenager, I was lucky enough to secure work experience in the press office at London Fashion Week. While that may sound glamorous, it really involved stuffing press packs for journalists and meeting and greeting journalists – all from a tiny office with no windows! I was absolutely hooked on the energy and drive and knew that from the age of 13 or 14, I wanted to work in the communication industry.

BEFORE JOINING THE AGITG AND GI CANCER INSTITUTE, WHAT WERE YOUR PREVIOUS ROLES?

I previously led the Oceania marketing and communications for a global animal conservation organisation. I have held various senior roles at communication agencies working in various sectors, from pharma, food, retail, entertainment and aviation. But my passion has always been working in the health and wellness space.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE ROLE AT AGITG AND GI CANCER INSTITUTE?

Aside from the making a real difference in the lives of people with GI Cancer, I was so excited with the thought of being able to showcase the quality and scale of work that the organisation undertakes. Another great pull was being part of an amazing team, who are not only knowledgeable and experts in their field, but are genuinely some of the most welcoming and supportive people I’ve been lucky enough to work with.

HOW HAVE YOU FOUND THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER SO FAR?

Well, no two days are ever the same!  I’m learning so much, from a research/treatment perspective and the impact that the organisation has on patients’ lives.  I’m anticipating that this learning trajectory will only continue during my 12-month tenure.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE ROLE?

I’m looking to working with Erin and the team to further grow brand awareness and attract and retain more members and donations. To have a positive impact in your communication and marketing plans, so that when Erin returns to the role in late July 2022, she is proud of the team’s achievements.
