Golf Day donates to GI Cancer Research

Following their South West Golf Tour in October, the team at The Mike Leeke Golf Day raised an incredible $1,100 playing three amazing courses at Busselton Golf Course, Margaret River and Mandurah Country Club.

The South West Golf Tour is an offshoot of the official Mike Leeke Golf Day which is being held on 4th December 2020 at Joondalup Resort in Perth.

With a group of 24 players and fantastic weather, the event was a great success.

We would like to give special thanks to Senior Committee Member and overall winner, Michael Wallis, for donating his winnings to the GI Cancer Institute.

The other notable mentions are Jason Bridges, John and Charlie Matusik and Adam Mosely who all added a major donation to the event. Every Par, birdie and eagle that was scored resulted in a donation which totalled close to $1,000!

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in the South West Golf Tour for their incredible support.

Some great snaps from the day are included below!

Mike Leeke Golf Day December 2020

Mike Leeke was a typical Aussie guy. He loved his family and friends, enjoyed his holidays to Bali and he was a keen sportsman – his great loves being squash and golf.

Originally from Queensland, Mike moved to Perth to be with the love of his life, Leonie. They later had two children together.

Mike sadly passed away in 2018 from Bowel Cancer.

“When Mike was initially diagnosed, he never let it get him down and was completely positive about the entire situation,” says Gareth Norman, friend of the Leeke Family.

For the fourth year in a row, The Mike Leeke Golf Day fundraiser will be held in Perth in December 2020 to honour Mike’s memory and to raise vital funds for GI cancer research – a cause close to Mike and Leonie’s hearts.

“The event only started as a simple get together and round of golf. However we started to get some commercial associates donating additional funds. Leonie held the GI Cancer Institute in very high regard and it was Leonie who requested we make contact with the GI Cancer Institute,” says Gareth.

In 2019 the Mike Leeke Golf Day raised an incredible $3,000 for GI cancer research and they are hoping to exceed that target this year. Thanks to the support of some incredible sponsors and prize donors, the 2020 Mike Leeke Golf Day will be bigger and better than ever!

“Mike was truly to be admired, enjoying every minute possible. Once the final diagnosis was confirmed, Mike’s house was a massive hub of people calling in and enjoying a beer. It was the true mark of the man. People came from all over the country just to spend that little bit of time with him.”

“He never let his sickness get him down. Five days before he passed, I was fortunate enough to play 18 holes of golf with him. He got a great laugh out of it as my golf bag fell into a lake. I had to go in swimming to get my clubs, phone and keys out of the lake!”

“We all miss Mike and some of the memories we have will forever make us smile.”
