Join our 2019 ‘Gutsy Cycling Team’ and commit to riding in the 2019 L’Etape Australia, a Le Tour de France affiliated event on 30th November 2019. This premium event, now in its 4th year, creates the closest experience to riding the Tour de France as is possible for amateur cyclists right here in the NSW Snowy Mountains. With fully closed roads, your gutsy experience will involve cycling a course that is the equal of a mountainous stage of the Tour de France!
“You don’t do it because it’s easy. It’s more appealing because it’s hard”.

After the success of our inaugural Gutsy ‘L’Etape’ Team in 2018, our intention is to form a Gutsy L’Etape team again in 2019. When joining a ‘Gutsy Challenge’ you embark on a remarkable journey to discover your inner strength as you raise money to improve medical treatments and outcomes for the 28,900 Australians diagnosed with Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Cancer every year.
At the same time, perhaps you’ll discover how far your personal boundaries stretch as you take on this physical challenge.
How far and where will I be riding?
We are looking for cyclists not afraid of a challenge. The L’Etape Australia one-day event has 2 riding options – ‘The Ride’ at 108km and ‘The Race’ at 170km.
We are ideally seeking 5 riders for both distances to create a team for each – both of which would start and finish in Jindabyne.
RACE – 170km ride over 4-9 hours : Difficulty Level : Hard
“The Race will take riders from Jindabyne to Rocky Plains, Berridale, the King of the Mountain sections at Col de Beloka and Col de Kosciuszko, descending back to Jindabyne.
The Race route is longer this year at 170km with a 3,000m height gain, with a new, long descent. The Race will have four Food Zones and two Energy Zones. Find out more on the official L’Etape Australia website here.
RIDE – 108km ride over 3-6 hours : Difficulty Level : Medium
The Ride is for those who wish to immerse themselves in the atmosphere and experience of L’etape without the added pressure of the final climb. At 108km and a peak of 1,300m the Ride is still a significant challenge.
When will I need to confirm my spot on the team by?
So we know you are planning to take on this challenge PLEASE complete the Expression of Interest form here to ensure your best chance of securing a spot on our Gutsy Challenge team.
In order to register the Gutsy Challenge team we would seek payment of the event registration component from interested cyclists directly via the L’Etape official site – with the remaining travel and accommodation costs payable separately.
Registrations via the L’Etape Australia website will then be open mid-year in 2019. When you register for the event you will just need to flag you are joining the Gutsy Challenge team.
When will I need to travel?
This event will take place on Saturday 30th November – so travel to Jindabyne from 29th November – 1st December would be required.
With this event taking place in the Snowy Mountains (approx. 2 hours from Canberra) we recommend riders plan their travel to arrive in Jindabyne on the afternoon or evening of Friday, returning on the Sunday after the event.
How much do I have to raise?
Each team member will be set the challenge to raise $1,500 as part of their fundraising efforts. Participants will have until the end of December 2019 to achieve their target.
Based on the experience of 40+ previous Gutsy Team Challenge participants, this target is often well exceeded and we will also provide support to help ensure you reach your goal!
What are the costs involved?
As an initial indication, costs for this event will include :
Team Registration – approx. $300/rider & done via the L’Etape official site.
Accommodation – 2 nights accommodation (twin share) + 2x breakfast & 2x dinners in Jindabyne cabins – approx. $400/ rider (Limited spots available in already secured cabins centrally located in Jindabyne – allocations will be made on a first in first served basis)
Flights and Travel – riders flying in from interstate will be responsible for arranging their own travel to/from Canberra for arrival Friday afternoon. Riders are welcome to drive themselves to Jindabyne for arrival Friday afternoon/evening.
What will the funds I raise be used for?
All money raised supports research in to gastro-intestinal cancer – facilitating the development of much needed improved treatments for the 28,000+ Australians diagnosed every year.
GI or digestive cancers affect all parts of the digestive tract – including Oesophagus, Stomach, Liver, Pancreas, Gallbladder & Biliary Tract, and Colorectal cancers. With an overall survival rate of just 50% – and as low as 9% for pancreatic cancer – GI cancers kill more Australians everyday than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. By participating in the Gutsy Challenge you are helping the GI Cancer Institute to raise essential funds for research to improve these survival rates and the quality of life for people diagnosed with GI cancer.
Money raised will be used to fund Gastro-Intestinal (GI) cancer clinical trials research and the GI Cancer Institute’s ‘Innovation Fund’ annual grant. This grant supports critical early stage research – enabling research concepts to be proven and ultimately leveraged to support larger scale clinical trials.
Who will I cycle with?
Joining the Gutsy Challenge Team is open to anyone interested in supporting GI cancer research and up for the challenge. From past experience people join our Gutsy Team Challenges to achieve personal goals, whilst also making a difference & improve outcomes for GI Cancer patients and support cancer research.
As part of our Gutsy Challenge Team you will be riding in the largest Le Tour de France event held outside of France, with over 3000 riders taking part in both of the courses last year!

As one of our Gutsy Team Challenge participants, who cycled over 360km through Cambodia in 2015 – explained ..
” The Gutsy Cycling Challenge was a fantastic experience. To be able to raise money for such a good cause and then training and pushing myself for this endurance event was very rewarding. Whilst it was physically the most arduous thing I have done, I now look back with a great sense of achievement.”
